Overview

Joseph Bryan “Jack” Geoghegan was a popular music hall writer and manager in the last half of the 19th century.  He published “10,000 Miles Away” under his name, but Hugill argued in his “Shanties of the Seven Seas” that Irish buskers had been singing the song as “Botany Bay” more than 50 years earlier.

One of his other popular songs, “Johnny we hardly knew ye” has been a staple performance piece by the Polish folk and maritime group, Sasiedzi.

Detailed information about Ten Thousand Miles Away can be found on the website Folk Songs and Music Hall.
