She has written a number of songs with maritime and fishing themes, and is starting to participate in and/or produce CDs that speak to those themes. She helped Maritime Folknet with [albums] focusing on tugboats and the Columbia Bar, and has a CD out that is a tribute to cannery and other fishery workers.

Garvey was born into a family with a musical mother and an Irish father. Growing up, Mary Garvey was surrounded by church music and was also influenced by her Scandinavian neighbourhood in Washington state. Garvey spent some time in Newfoundland while attending graduate school, and has visited several times since. These days, Garvey enjoys group singing and participating in music camps and song circles. She also plays the accordion and is a dedicated participant on the Mudcat Cafe forum. She has composed songs on a number of topics, including crises such as the Vietnam war and collapse of the fishing industry.  From the website, Disaster Songs in Canada.
