Opus Méduse, founded in 2022, is a Breton pop-rock band that stands out for its powerful and socially conscious songs, all tied together by a central theme: the sea — a symbol of freedom.

It can be said that in some ways this group represents a fresh take on the genre of sea songs, bringing it into popular culture for the 21st Century.

Steering clear of the clichés often found in neo-traditional sea shanties, the band has chosen to explore contemporary issues through the lens of the ocean in their debut album released under the ARFOLK label. From the lives of islanders and lighthouse keepers to the rising sea levels, the album touches on a range of topical concerns. These maritime themes are further enriched by bold, emotionally charged lyrics that address pressing issues such as sexual freedom and the plight of migrants.

Review by ARFOLK of the group’s 2025 CD, La Nouvelle Rive, (The New Shore)

“With this new album, Opus Méduse aims to reinvent the maritime music tradition — often seen as masculine, harsh, sexist, and confined to tragic or comedic narratives. This surprising and refreshing pop-rock album invites listeners on a journey, including a stop at Belle-Île-en-Mer, the homeland of singer-songwriter Alexandre Sallet.”
