Overview

Ba Akoubig is a vocal group that performs traditional songs related to the sea and sailors, sung in both Breton and French. The group originated from the Kanerion Bro Boïo association, which is dedicated to preserving and passing on the rich musical heritage of the Bro Boïo region.

Based in Bignan, Kanerion Bro Boïo (which translates to Singers of the Boïo Country) is an intergenerational and intermunicipal association founded in 1987, following its first “filaj”—a traditional afternoon gathering of singers—titled Kan ha Diskan e bro Boïo. Today, the association includes around fifty members, ranging in age from 10 to 96.

One of its core missions is to collect and transmit traditional Breton and French songs from the Bro Boïo area, which encompasses Bignan, Saint-Jean-Brévelay, Colpo, Saint-Allouestre, Moustoir-Ac, and the canton of Locminé. With the Breton language and its musical heritage at risk, the association sees an urgent need to safeguard and share these cultural treasures.
