Overview
Bois Y Bryn is a Sea Shanty Band based in Cwmbran, South Wales formed by singers from local choirs and bands. They enjoy performing a foot-tapping, audience-engaging yet harmonious range of primarily shanty but with a spattering of folk, including Welsh sounds.
The group hosts Sea Shanty Night at the Barry Yacht Club, with proceeds benefitting the Barry Dock Lifeboat. Check the Bois y Bryn Facebook page for scheduling information.
For the 3rd year running, we are organising Wales’s shanty festival (in Newport for the 2nd year), which we call Pirates in the Port. It’s on the weekend of 30/31 May and features over 50 bands from all over the UK playing in 18 Newport venues. It’s all free of course and for the 2nd year, our designated charities are SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association), RNLI and Wales Air Ambulance.
Posted on Facebook 17 May 2024: “What a wonderful future Bois y Bryn have! So much is starting to take place! Tonight we have been given a residency at the Parkway Hotel on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. In the next few weeks we host the first ever sea shanty festival in Wales at Barry Island on the 1st and 2nd of June (believe me this must not be missed) then in July we will be filming with Stacey (from Gavin and Stacey) and Wynne Evans the wonderful tenor from GO Compare at Barry Island, waving and singing them off on a sea journey. This will be shown on BBC TV next year. Please give this a share and Bois y Bryn a follow so you can keep up with everything that we are achieving. Thank you very much.”
