Clifford Long taught a sea shanty class at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago in the ’80s. The songbook that he compiled for that class has been copied, edited, appended to, and otherwise reused up to the 2023 Brew City Shanty Sings in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Clifford Long and David HB Drake met while serving as shantymen and educators aboard the HMS Bounty in 1990 while docked in Sausalito, CA. Long was returning to Chicago and Drake came in from Milwaukee to fill the shantyman position for the rest of the Pacific tour. He is a former member of The Rose and Dragon, along with Dusty Rose and David HB Drake.
He was editor of one of the pirate magazines that briefly materialized in the early 2000s, in the wake of the success of the first few Pirates of the Caribbean films.
