The French sea song group, les Marins des Abers is a men’s choir from Brittany that was formed around the year 2000 and was made up of a number of members of the “War Araog Atao” choir. They were quickly joined by choristers from different choirs in North Finistère and the group is now made up some thirty voices and a group of musicians.

The group sing of the sea, of Brittany and of its environment.

Between 20 and 40 concerts are given depending on the year, more particularly during the summer, for port festivals, for major regional maritime festivals as well as local sea festivals, providing entertainment in campsites and holiday villages, and throughout the year, for shows in commercial spaces, along with for other activities such as business meals, general assemblies, concerts for charities, family celebrations etc…, organised by municipalities, local authorities, or associations.

Serge Avetand is president of the association.

The website addresses given for the group, (“marins-desabers.com” and “marinsdesabers.com”) do not appear to be functional as of May 2025, nor was it possible to locate at this time a location where their following recordings may be purchased;

  • Les Marins des Abers chantent la mer (2005)
  • Au coeur des embruns (2008)
  • Tant qu’il y aura la mer (2012)
  • Sur mer mais aussi sur terre (2015)

A note on the name of the group; The Côte des Abers is the name given to a stretch of coastline in France located in Finistère, Brittany. It takes its name from the “ambers” or rias / estuaries that cut into the coast there. At high tide, the sea rises far upstream, while at low tide, an aber is seen to remain almost dry, revealing its muddy bottom.
