Landlubbers Found Shanty Choir in the Odenwald
1988
In the beginning, there was the sea—Arno & Thilo Spilger finish their tour of duty aboard the *Sea Cloud*. In their luggage: a handful of shanties.
1989
Spring – First gatherings. Enthusiastic—though in terms of quality, still rather dubious—shanty singing by the original trio (consisting of Matz, Arno, and Thilo) can be heard drifting from Matz’s living room. The era of unison singing begins. Matz takes over musical direction, nurturing this still-delicate little shanty plant.
Breaking a Taboo – Andrea—Arno and Thilo’s sister—joins the group, and it becomes clear: women are allowed to sing in *this* shanty choir, too!
Friday, October 13 – Official founding date. “The Girls”—Birgit, Ada, Gabi, and Sabine (also known as the VCH Quartet)—board the shanty ship, and the choir, still nameless at the time, doubles its membership. For a brief period, the women outnumber the men.
1990
Full Steam Ahead! – The choir grows rapidly, and the number of singers and musicians stabilizes at around 20. Various smaller, unofficial performances take place at more or less private events.
Schann Scheid – With the arrival of Manfred Maser, the “Odenwald Shanty Choir” truly becomes *the* Odenwald Shanty Choir. Manfred breathes (new?) life into the character of Schann Scheid.
April 30 – The first—somewhat sheepish and nervous—official performance takes place at the cabaret pub “Villa” in Weinheim. As the group does not yet feel ready to perform a full evening’s program on their own, they share the stage, alternating sets with the clown, entertainer, and magician Bellowski.
Premiere! – On St. Nicholas’ Day, the big moment arrives. The Odenwald Shanty Choir presents its first full-evening program—once again at the “Villa,” the choir’s regular haunt at the time. The choir members were initially astonished by the audience’s enthusiasm, but this soon gave way to the realization that—well—perhaps they really *were* pretty great after all. A euphoric remark from one choir member has gone down in history: “I think they like it!”
The stage design—as well as all those that were to follow—was created by Michael Haufe.
1991
Stan the Man—Ada, Gabi, and Matz encounter the legendary shantyman Stan Hugill at the *Fête du Chant de Marin* in Paimpol, Brittany. Pure inspiration! Aside from that—performances, performances, performances…
1992
Finally! — they had found a name: the Odenwälder Shantychor. You’d think they could have come up with that a lot sooner!

Im Anfang war die See – Arno & Thilo Spilger beenden ihre Heuer auf der Sea Cloud. Im Gepäck: eine Handvoll Shanties.
1989
Frühjahr – Erste Zusammenkünfte. Begeisterte, qualitativ jedoch noch eher fragwürdige Shantygesänge des Urtrios, bestehend aus Matz, Arno und Thilo sind aus Matzens Wohnzimmer zu hören. Epoche der Einstimmigkeit. Matz übernimmt die musikalische Leitung und hegt das noch zarte Shanty Pflänzchen.
Tabu-Bruch – Andrea, die Schwester von Arno und Thilo stößt dazu und es wird klar: In diesem Shanty Chor dürfen auch Frauen mitsingen!
Fr. 13. Oktober – Offizielles Gründungsdatum. “Die Mädels” Birgit, Ada, Gabi und Sabine, auch das VCH-Quartett genannt, entern das Shanty-Schiff und der damals noch namenlose Chor verdoppelt seine Mitgliederzahl. Die Frauen sind für kurze Zeit in der Überzahl.
1990
Ab geht’s! – Der Chor wächst rasant und die Zahl der Sänger/innen und Musiker pendelt sich bei ca. 20 ein. Diverse kleinere, inoffizielle Auftritte bei mehr oder weniger privaten Veranstaltungen.
Schann Scheid – Durch das Dazustoßen Manfred Masers wird der Odenwälder Shanty Chor zum Odenwälder Shanty Chor. Manfred haucht der Figur des Schann Scheid (neues?) Leben ein.
30. April – Erster, verschämt-nervöser, offizieller Auftritt in der Kleinkunstkneipe “Villa” in Weinheim. Da man sich zu einem abendfüllenden Programm noch nicht in der Lage fühlt, bestreitet man den Auftritt im Wechsel mit dem Clown, Entertainer und Zauberer Bellowski.
Premiere! – Am Nikolaustag isses soweit. Der Odenwälder Shanty Chor präsentiert sein erstes abendfüllendes Programm, wieder in der damaligen Chor Stammkneipe “Villa”. Die Verwunderung der Chormitglieder ob der Begeisterung des Publikums ist zunächst groß, weicht dann aber der Einsicht, daß man wohl doch irgendwie toll ist. Überliefert das euphorische Statement eines Chormitglieds: “Isch glaab denne gfällt’s”.

Stan the man – Ada, Gabi und Matz erleben Shantyman Stan Hugill auf der Fête du Chant de Marin in Paimpol/Bretagne. Inspiration! Ansonsten – Auftritte, Auftritte, Auftritte…………..

Endlich! – hatte man einen Namen gefunden: Odenwälder Shanty Chor – hätte man ja auch schon früher draufkommen können
