In the port city of Stettin, which once boasted several groups performing sea songs and ballads, maritime tales were rarely heard until recently. However, thanks to sailing singing enthusiasts, the Cutty Sark Tavern has recently come alive with concerts and regular shanty gatherings, and a promising new band that draws from the classics has also emerged.

Q.A.R.
We perform maritime folk and Celtic music. The line-up was formed in 2022 in Szczecin and consists of four people experienced in the genre, all of us having previously played in other formations. Our idea is to perform classic English shanties in their closest to the original form, with the ‘kick n’ bite’ characteristic of folk rock bands such as ‘The Rumjacks’ or ‘Dropkick Murphys’. Our frontman Oyster Dave’s linguistic flair and love for accents and dialects help us in delivering said effect. In addition, we perform vibrant Irish, Scottish and English tunes that one might have heard on the decks of great sailing ships past their working hours played by foo-foo bands. We use vivid instrumentation specific to the island culture: Fiddle, melodeon, bodhran, mandolin and Irish bouzouki. In the very first year of the band’s formation, we successfully played many concerts, including ones at major maritime music festivals. We were met with a lively and enthusiastic response to our gigs, which greatly motivates us to continue developing and working on our repertoire.
