Overview
Santiano is a hugely popular and successful German band from the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, whose songs combine rock, Irish folk, sea shanty, and schlager music.
Santiano is without a doubt the figurehead when it comes to German-speaking pirate music. Mediaeval rock, Schlager and sailor songs are so perfectly matched to each other that no matter which generation you come from, you just like to listen to them. So their songs still run up and down on a wide variety of radio stations and really penetrate deep into any ear canal, no matter how engrained.
Santiano has achieved significant commercial success in the German music scene, with all eight of their studio albums through 2024 reaching number one on the German charts, followed by their ninth consecutive chart-topper, Da braut sich was zusammen, in October 2025; the band has sold over 5.5 million albums and amassed more than one billion streams worldwide. Notable hits include “Frei wie der Wind,” “Tanzen wie die Teufel,” and “Keiner geht verloren,” which have become staples in their live performances.
The band has earned recognition with multiple Echo Pop awards for Best Group in the popular music category in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2018, highlighting their influence in the folk and volksmusik genres.
Known for their energetic live shows, Santiano has performed over 500 concerts, sold 1.5 million tickets, and often supports charitable causes such as the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS). Their music frequently explores themes of adventure, unity, and the sea, resonating with audiences through a mix of original songs and traditional folk adaptations.
