Overview
Thank you for paying attention to our beautiful Shanty Choir “ALLEMANSEINDJE”. An allemanseindje (English: “all-man’s end”) is a length of braided rope, ending with a Turkish knot, tied to a ship’s bell and used to ring the bell.
We were founded in 2004, and sing with a group of 25 enthusiastic men. Rehearsals take place once a week on Monday evenings from 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm. Quay Z Of Starkenborgh Canal South Side 1 Zuidhorn.
Our goal is to sing well and beautifully, but it is also very important to sing with pleasure. Even though “external” performance is not our main goal, we would like to show how beautifully we can sing with a certain regularity. That is why we occasionally perform at cultural events or at healthcare institutions.
Then what do we sing? We started with shanty (sailor) songs, but other catchy songs were soon added, which is not to say that these are all easy to sing songs. We often sing in polyphony, sometimes with soloists, and our repertoire includes more than 70 songs. So we practice every Monday evening, but in such a way that everyone enjoys it. We are accompanied by our fantastic accordion player and the whole is led / controlled by a professional conductor who has a good sense of what the choir wants to sing.
We started with Dutch and Groningen/Frisian Shanties, but at the moment we also have many English and German songs on the program.
There is much more to tell about our cozy choir, but you will get the best impression by just coming and listening and if you want to sing along. There are no obligations, but just having fun singing along will undoubtedly give you the feeling to know more about this, or want to join. The membership fee is 60 euros per quarter.
So I would say come, see, listen and try. We start at half past eight in the evening. Before that there is coffee/tea, also during the break. Finally, I would like to reveal that after singing there is a “third half” in which the results can be evaluated with a glass.
In 2011 they produced a CD, Luid De Bel! Joukje Grijpsma is credited as the conductor.
Their songs are played on Cees Vlieland’s radio program, Het Zeegat Uit (English: “Out of the Tidal Inlet”). Their choir can also be heard regularly on: Shanties bij de Vleet (English: “Shanties Galore); songs can be heard there every Saturday morning.
Shantykoor Allemanseindje is a member of Shanty Nederland.
