Overview
In 1987, our crew embarked on a musical journey of discovery into the world of sea shanties. Nine water sports enthusiasts from Romanshorn laid the foundation for a unique shared voyage through two centuries of maritime history with a musical performance at a convivial club event. This led to the discovery of sea shanties on the upper reaches of Lake Constance. The traditional songs, reflecting all facets of seafaring and the working methods on the old full-rigged ships, captivated the water sports enthusiasts. New shanties were constantly being discovered and arranged for musical performance. More and more friends joined the choir.
The approximately 25 singers and instrumentalists have already enjoyed many wonderful events and performances on their musical journey, including the christening of passenger ships and appearances on television and radio. Highlights, however, have undoubtedly included performing at shanty festivals – most notably the Sea-Folk-Song Festival in Romanshorn, which attracted over 1,000 visitors. Every year, the crew also cruises international waters, meeting with choirs abroad.
The Singing Sailor’s Crew comes from Switzerland 🇨🇭. The group has been around since at least 2012 when they hosted the Sea Song Folk Festival, featuring a number of established, European maritime music groups. According to Discogs, the group (here called “Singing Sailors Crew Romanshorn”) produced an album titled Heave Away, released in CD format in 2000. In 2004 they released another CD album, titled Goes Westward. Little information is found on the internet for this group, but as they’re performing at the Internationaal Folk & Seasongs Festival Bie Daip Appingedam in 2023 it appears that they are still active.
