Overview
The London Sea Shanty Collective are a Hackney-based community choir in London who sing sea shanties and songs of the sea with one eye to the tradition and the other to the future.
The London Sea Shanty Collective – “a glorious bunch of songsters”
Founded in 2017 and meeting every week in Hackney, East London, we continue to keep shanties and songs of the sea alive and relevant to today, arranging traditional songs (sometimes with a contemporary twist), and expanding the repertoire with our own compositions.
We perform regularly in London and across the UK and Ireland and sing at festivals, most recently in France and Germany, and in national institutions, in pubs, clubs and care-homes, in churches and cathedrals, on barges and ships, to crowds and congregations, to festival goers and charity fund-raisers, to lifeboat crew and the naval chiefs of numerous nations, to name but a few.
As a non-auditioning community choir, we‘re open to all and made up of women and men of all ages from around the world who are committed to social justice, equality – and the joy of singing.
It is a joy and camaraderie we love to share, so keep an eye on our ‘Gigs’ page for the latest on where you can find us – and do join in when you’re there!
