Overview
Wareham Whalers have been together now for over 17 years. We enjoy singing a wide range of shanties, songs of the sea as well as a number of songs about the sea composed by members of our crew . We adopt the style that sailors would have used nearly 200 hundred years ago when they were working. So we sing with no accompaniment and where appropriate put in the stresses that would have signalled a pull on the heavy ropes. We also sing the songs common for the rare moments of recovery down below. We aim to capture the strength of this music and ensure there’s never a dull moment when the Whalers are about!
Whilst singing we raise money for local charities including the RNLI, regularly singing for their lifeboat naming ceremonies at their headquarters in Poole, England.
We enjoy performing our own concerts, singing at festivals both in England and in France as well as singing at a range of venues in our county of Dorset.We also enjoy putting on workshops to explain the origins and practical uses of shanties and encouraging other people to get involved and become interested in them.
Above all, we enjoy each other’s company and we sing for the sheer pleasure it gives and we like to share this with our audiences.
