What Shall We Do – The Hannover Shanty People. Another shantychor? No!
When they started singing shanties in April 2018, they already knew that this rather unusual music is a fascinating cultural form, even outside of sentimental maritime hits.
Far away from the ship’s piano and Frisian fishermen’s shirts, they take their audience back to long-forgotten world of the large sailing ships with their very well-harmonized voices, supplemented with well-founded background information.
When ships were still made of wood, sailors were made of iron.
It used to be said: one good shantyman replaces ten people on a line!
Today, it is true: one good shanty replaces 1,000 pop songs on an iPod!
In the program:
- the songs from the “old times” – shanties, forebitters and sea songs
- stories of hard work at sea, of fish, and tar
- stories of Heuer and of girls in the harbor
- stories of poor food, hunger and disease
- stories of longing for home on land
- seamen’s yarns and anecdotes
Songs for sailors and landlubbers!
