Overview

Richard Maitland was one of several working sailors recorded by Alan Lomax and his team, the songs released in the series Folk Music of the United States in 1952.  The collection was re-released as American Sea Songs & Shanties under the Library of Congress Archive of Folk Culture.  Lomax recorded Maitland at Sailor’s Snug Harbor, Staten Island, New York in 1939.

The liner notes for this collection are very well written, but refer the reader for further study in the works of William Main Doerflinger (Shantymen and Shantyboys) and Joanna C. Colcord (Songs of American Sailormen).
