April shanty sing 4th Sunday – NOT on Easter
The April Shanty sing will be Sunday, April 27th, from 2 pm to 4:30 pm at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Lincoln Square. This is the fourth Sunday in April.
Bring your shanties, sea songs, drinking songs, sea or river or lake or other water-themed chorus songs, etc. April showers bring May flowers, so if you have songs about stormy weather or spring, that will be especially appropriate!
We’ll be at the Old Town School of Folk Music (aka OTSFM) at 4545/4544 N. Lincoln, Chicago IL 60625, which is kind enough to (unofficially) host us once again. We should be in our usual spot on the third floor of the building on the east side of the street.
Feel free to bring snacks to share (please nothing messy) or whatever beverages you may need to support your singing (sometimes people bring those to share, too).
For those who like to plan ahead the next sings will be May 18, June 15, and July 20.
How to get to OTSFM: Old Town School of Folk Music is in Lincoln Square a little south of the intersection of Lawrence, Lincoln and Western—it is on Lincoln between Wilson and Sunnyside. This is a short walk from the Western brown line CTA station.
Free Parking near OTSFM: There is both street and lot parking in the area. Parking meters are free on Sunday. Parking in the city pay lot (there is one just south of OTSFM in the same block, on the east side of the street), is free on Sunday. However it is $8 in the OTSFM lot (in back of the free lot near the school). Free parking on the side streets is also a possibility, most are not permit zones.
Mask policy at OTSFM: https://www.oldtownschool.org/aboutus/policy/health/
They recommend masks but don’t require them, and the same applies to the shanty sing. And obviously, if you aren’t feeling well this month, please stay home, we’ll see you next time!
This is a group for people in the greater Chicago area who enjoy singing sea shanties (or sea chanties as the case may be) and maritime music. We usually meet up for a shanty sing once a month. The group has moved indoors from the gazebo at Welles Park to the Old Town School of Folk Music in Lincoln Square, room 212. For details please visit the Chicago Shanties Discussion Page.
