In a 6 May 2026 email message, Max Thurmer wrote, “Producing the radio program “Oud Vlaardingen” every Saturday morning from 1999 to 2018—and “Shanties bij de Vleet” from 2010 to the present—feels like quite enough to me. After more than 1,700 programs, I am going to take some time for myself. I will, however, remain active as a guide at the Museum Vlaardingen, as well as a crew member on the “Balder VL 92.” Naturally, I will continue singing with the Shanty Choir “De Vlaardingse Muiters.” So, I certainly won’t be bored.”
Shanties Bij de Vleet (English: “Plenty of Shanties”)
As a listener, you’ve discovered that you can hear shanty music and seafaring songs in a variety of versions and languages. We have been broadcasting since 2010, and the responses we receive from home and abroad clearly show that our program is widely appreciated. We would like to hear your comments as well; preferably in our “guestbook”(“gastenboek” / gastenboek 2024) so that everyone can read them. Not only can you respond to our output, but you can also let us have news about your choir e.g. a new CD; a special performance; an anniversary etc., in short anything you want to get out there about your choir. You can listen to our program on a number of stations. Click on the appropriate tab “luisteren” and make your choice.
The program host for Shanties Bij de Vleet was Max Thurmer. Chiel Harte was the producer of the show. Bart Zandstra was the technician for both the show and the website.
Shanties Bij de Vleet does not have a social media presence, nor does it have videos posted on YouTube or Vimeo.
