Overview
Statsraad Lehmkuhl is a three-masted barque built in 1914, and the world’s oldest and largest tall ship in active year-round service. Based in Bergen, Norway, the ship is owned and operated by the Statsraad Lehmkuhl Foundation and offers sail training voyages open to all – in Norway and abroad – including events like The Tall Ships Races.
In recent years, Statsraad Lehmkuhl has taken on an increasingly important role in ocean advocacy as a proud ambassador for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Through the global One Ocean Expedition, the ship serves not only as a sail training vessel, but also as a research ship and floating university – promoting education, science, and international cooperation for a sustainable ocean.
All member of the voyage crew, regardless of role background, are expected to take part in every aspect of life at sea under the guidance of a professional crew. Participants receive a diploma and trainee pin, and can request an IMO- and Sail Training International-approved logbook.
The Lehmkuhl Foundation is led by CEO and expedition leader Haakon Steinar Vatle, who is also the founder of the maritime folk band Storm Weather Shanty Choir.
