Overview
The 3 Week Carlyn Trip
In the Summer of 2003, Four Winds * Westward Ho revived an old camp tradition — taking a 3-week long sailboat trip to Princess Louisa Inlet, located off the Strait of Georgia in Western Canada.
Every year, a select group of campers from all over the world have an incredible adventure as they learn the necessary skills and knowledge of sailing the sea to reach this incredible destination. It is truly an adventure of a lifetime for all those who participate.
Led by a qualified, licensed captain and staff, sailors spend several days in Camp preparing Camp’s 61’ yawl, Carlyn, getting acquainted with each other, and learning their roles and responsibilities for the duration of the trip. Once they set sail, they’re away from camp for about 3 weeks, visiting many beautiful destinations along the way.
Campers entering grades 9 and 10 are eligible to apply go on the Carlyn trip, and tuition is the same as it is for our regular four-week session. Every year, we flip flop the big trip between the two four-week sessions. In odd numbered years, it is First Session, and in even numbered years, it is Second Session.
Music
Music has been an underpinning element of the Four Winds community since Ruth Brown founded Camp in 1927. It has lasted throughout the generations and continues to connect former campers and staff to their magical days spent on an island far away.
All the songs that you see featured below in our Song Book PDF and on the Four Winds SoundCloud account are songs that we might sing every day, the more upbeat ones in the morning on the Lodge Steps, and the calmer ones after Evening Activity, before we go to bed. The classics are alive and well at Four Winds, 90+ years since some of them were first sung in front of the fire place in the Lodge
We add recordings to our SoundCloud account each year to share the musical talents and passions of current Campers and Staff.
We hope that these recordings share the magic of Four Winds with new folks and connect those who are returning to the songs they hold dear from summers spent on a very special island far away.
