Regina Maris sinks at dock during Hurricane Bob (5 Jan 1994)

Regina Maris Sinks at Dock

From the historical archives of Regina Maris.

In Greenport, New York on February 3, 1994, during a howling rainstorm — which had not been forecast — Regina Maris sank, but she was refloated within 24 hours by the efforts of the hard-working volunteers. Lighting and phone systems had been damaged, but the preparedness of the loyal workers had prevented serious destruction. After the Hurricane Bob sinking, they had redone the wiring and had placed all electric pump connections, the circuit breaker box and the two gas-powered generators in protected places on the ship or ashore. See the book DREAMERS BEFORE THE MAST for many more stories of near losses and heroic saves by the humans who sailed Regina Maris during her 109 years.
