“The above crews are invited to be honorary members of The Shanty Academy as of 1st May 2023. Celebration event to follow.”

Offering further context, “Oh yes t’was official. Organized by the Shantymen of Devon and The Shanty Academy.  Part of a mission to merge the shanty community with the pirate community.
With the objective of introducing pirates to traditional and acoustic songs of the sea. And introducing shanty singers to traditional and authentic nautical clothing and accessories. To build the confidence of all to express and develop their own character and styles. And to provide a greater resistance to conformity, the wearing of corporate branding style synthetic polo shirts. Also to introduce, and attract children and families to singing shanties It is a radical event to address the imbalance of the march of blandness.  It was a great success. 50 shanty singers filled the harbor, local ale houses and a gin and rum distillery. We expect about 200 next year. Over 1000 serious pirates and 20,000 visitors part time pirates.”
