From Swinoujskie.info.
Jerzy Porębski, a famous shantymen and author of songs about sailing, from Świnoujście, is dead. He was a doctor of oceanography. He worked on fishing vessels. He was a co-founder and a long-time member of the legendary Polish shanty group Stare Dzwony (English: “Old Bells”).

He started playing guitar and composing his own songs and stories in the mid-1960s, when he started sailing on long ocean voyages. Songs and guitar, according to his opinion and the crews of ships, were a “cure” for the nostalgia and hardships of fishing life.

He started his stage activity in the 1970s with performances at shanty festivals, thanks to which his fishing ballads became more and more popular.
