Bremen’s International Festival Maritim is one of the largest maritime music festivals in the world. It has tradionally taken place on the first weekend of August since 1999. Thousands of visitors come every year to the riverbank of the Weser and the historical harbor area in the northern part of Bremen, called Vegesack. Around thirty international bands and groups perform on several stages their stylistic range from traditional shanties and work songs to rousing folk punk and heavy metal. The Festival starts on Friday evening and the concerts continue until midnight. Traditionally, street concerts take place on Saturday mornings before the official stage program starts at 3 pm. Sundays are for early birds because the beginning is at 11 am. The grand final is around 10.30 pm. The festival is very popular with artists as well as the visitors. The artists appreciate the family atmosphere, they have known each other for many years, and they are always well looked after. Visitors appreciate not only the fact that the festival is free and outdoor but also the fantastic stage program and the wide range of food and drink stalls. It’s fair to say it’s an institution.
